SIMMONS BEDDING COMPANY – it all started in 1870 when Zalman G. Simmons, a former cheese-box maker from Wisconsin, followed his vision about a better, more comfortable mattress. With the invention of wrapped coil springs in 1900 by James Marshall things moved really fast. These more comfortable yet expensive to make springs were only to be found in luxury liners like the Titanic. In 1925, when Simmon’s top engineer John Franklin Gail invented a machine which coils wire and inserts them in fabric sleeves, the unique Pocketed Coil system was born which is the base of the Simmons Beautyrest mattresses. In 1927 Eleanor Roosevelt features a print advertising for the Simmons Beautyrest line and collection also using her radio show into the 1930s. The size of King and Queen mattresses were introduced by Simmons in 1958. 1995 – don’t try this at home by the way – an advertising campaign called “The Bowling Ball Mattress” shows that one person’s movement won’t disturb the other one’s sleep – only on a Simmons mattress.
