Furnishing Your Home Office for Functionality and Style

home office

Today, the number of Americans working from home is steadily increasing. According to recent data from the U.S census 5.2% of workers worked from home in 2017, or roughly translated as 8 million people. And even those who don’t officially work from home, many require an office space where important administrative duties are taken care of—taxes, bills, emails, correspondence, holiday cards, etc.  So when looking to furnish your office space in your home, there are a few things to keep in mind.

What Are Your Specific Needs?

First thing is first. Before getting your office furniture, carefully consider what your needs are. That is, what kind of work will you do on the desk and office space and what kind of furniture will make that easier, more convenient, and efficient.  For example, do you have a laptop or a desktop? Do you have both? How big of a monitor do you want to have on the desk surface? Are you a person that likes to extend piles of paper and files? Do you prefer more desk space or less? Here at NFL, we have small desks and large workspaces as well. Is your desk part of a credenza where you have other books and filings? Would you prefer a small rectangular shape or an L-shape desk? How many drawers do you have? Consider how much filing space or drawer space your specific work requires.

Materials & Style

There are obviously lots of options when it comes to the kind of desk you can purchase. The style of your desk or office furniture might depend on the style of the room itself. Are you looking for a dark wood or a light wood? Do you prefer metal surface or plywood? Are you looking for wood color, white, black or other shade?  When it comes to style, are you looking for something classic and old-fashioned, or a more modern and contemporary look?

The Essential Office Chair

Whether you are spending eight hours a day in your home office, or a couple of hours during the weekend, comfort is probably a big deciding factor when thinking about an office chair.  The office chair is an essential component of the office. Are you looking for a large cushioned chair? A computer chair? Do you need a rolling chair? Choose a chair that matches your style and needs.

Accessories for Your Home Office

An office is, of course, not only made up of the desk space but the entire room. There are many ways to furnish a functional, cozy, and comfortable office space. Other pieces of furniture that you can add to your office include lamps, sofas, chairs, and more.

Tips for Creating the Perfect Guest Bedroom… So Perfect, You Might Want to Move In

guest bedroom

Becoming a homeowner means welcoming your home to those who’ve welcomed you to theirs throughout the years. Be it your big sister, your parents, cousins from out of town, or your best friend who always gave up her bed when you needed a place to stay for the night. Think of a guest bedroom as a mini hotel. You want it to receive a 5-star review and you want guests to rave about their amazing stay. It might seem like a daunting task or one you’re not entirely up for but we promise you, if you follow these simple tips, creating the perfect guest bedroom will be a breeze.

1. Keep It Comfortable With the Bedding

Think pillows and fuzzy blankets. Follow the model of your favorite hotel and add enough pillows that a few will end up on the floor or by the feet and incorporate sheets that make you so cozy, you’ll wonder why you don’t have the same in your own bedroom. Once you’ve created the perfect bed, adding furniture around it will be the next step.

2. Add a Nightstand With an Alarm and Charging Station

Having a nightstand in a guest bedroom is important because many times your guests need to set an alarm and a place to charge their cell phones. Not only that, but it gives them a place to put a glass of water as they recharge from their long drive. Consider also adding a lamp, a frame or two, and a vase for flowers.

3. Make Sure There are Mirrors

Whether guests are staying for a weekend or a week, having a full-length mirror in the room makes it easier for them to prepare for the day. You might even want to add a smaller mirror on the wall. This will be beneficial if you have two people staying in the room so that they each have a place to get ready.

4. Hang Some Pictures On the Walls

The decor is what will truly make the room come alive. It’s also what will make your guests feel more at home. We suggest choosing a large painting or frame to make that the centerpiece then adding two or three smaller ones. Have fun with your decorations but make them pieces that anyone staying over would enjoy.

Bonus: Give it a Test Run!

Before the arrival of your guests, sleep in the bedroom for a night. See what it feels like falling asleep and waking up. This will allow you to determine what’s right, what’s missing, what you like, what you don’t like, and any other changes you’ll want to make before it’s ready for guests.

How to Buy Furniture

New furniture in a houseAs the holidays come to a close and the guests begin to leave, you may be glad to stop hearing your mother complain about the lumpy sofa bed and your father telling you it is time for new furniture. You know you need a home makeover, you’re just not sure how to make it happen. It is not so much the money, but the whole furniture buying process that has you in a tizzy.

Before You Head to the Furniture Store

The first step is to decide what pieces you want to purchase and for what rooms. Unless you recently won the lottery, it’s safe to say you won’t be furnishing your whole home at once. Try a room or a piece at a time, depending on your budget. Set and stick to a budget. You do not want to go broke buying furniture.

That being settled, you need to measure the space you will be furnishing. You may think the room is big enough for a queen bed, but then when it’s delivered, there is no room for anything else and you are stuck with a problem. By measuring beforehand you will know what fits where.

The last step before you head out the door is to determine your style. Regardless of whether you are modern, traditional, antique, or unique, there is furniture for you. Know what you want and stick to it. Do not be persuaded by an overzealous salesperson.

This goes for color, as well. Bright funky colors may seem cool now, but will they still be “chic” a few years from now? Furniture is expensive and built to last. It should not be thrown out because it is out of style. Bring in colors in other ways and purchase neutral colored furnishings.

Consider Your Lifestyle

If you have young children, white may not be the best color for your furniture. In addition, you may want to ask about extended warranties as they pertain to stains and other issues that come with children. However, if you are purchasing for a guest room rarely used, color may not be an issue.

Quality Should be the Number One Factor

Low price does not necessarily mean low quality. Regardless of the cost, the furniture you choose should be made of hardwood that is screwed together. If it is made with glue or particle board, avoid it as it will need to be replaced and will cost more in the end.

When looking for high quality furniture at a low price in the El Paso area, look no further than National Furniture Liquidators. They will have you living in the lap of luxury for less.
