Furniture Maintenance: How to Keep Your Furniture Clean and Intact Forever
We at National Furniture Liquidators not only want you to get high-quality furniture from us, but also maintain it for years to come. That’s why we thought we’d go over the basics of furniture care, so life doesn’t take too much of a toll on your beautiful furniture.
Heat = Damage
Heat is one of the most common causes of furniture damage. Spilling hot beverages, forgetting about hot mugs and irons, and other forms of heat can warp or melt the furniture that it’s on, which makes the furniture deformed and less useful. Never put extremely hot items on your furniture, because it can be the quickest way to turn your beautiful furniture into a nightmare.
Mold and Mildew
Just like heat, excess water can also be a huge problem for your furniture, especially if it is wooden. Water, if left unchecked, can breed fungi and mold onto your furniture, which looks terrible and can be hazardous to your own health. To get rid of fungi or mold, make sure the room the furniture is in is as dry as possible. A humid room will activate and accelerate mold spores, but once the room is dry, they become dormant. Making the room very cold will also make the spores dormant, and then the mold can be safely removed. Generally, you want your furniture in a cool, dry area to have the best results. If your furniture is leather, be sure to wipe up water as soon as it is spilled; otherwise, it can discolor the leather and it will be an eyesore.
Wax On, Wax Off
The same way you’d give your care or your body regular maintenance, your furniture needs regular maintenance too. We recommend waxing your furniture once a year, to rejuvenate it from the use that it has to undergo throughout the year. Also, it’s important to regularly flip or rotate your furniture. This is because sunlight can also slowly make colors fade, so you’ll want to move your furniture periodically so any fading or discoloration over time is even on your furniture.
Move With Care
When moving your furniture around (especially heavy furniture), make sure you don’t move it incorrectly and torque the joints and screws in the process. This can significantly weaken the integrity of your furniture, and increase the chances of it breaking and needing professional repair or downright replacement. Ask for help if you need to move furniture, be it for a remodel or just for spring cleaning.
